My exhibition Wandering Amidst the Colors contains an autobiographical body of work developed over the course of this past year while I searched for predominantly Afghan neighborhoods in New York. The series began out of a need to feel more connected to my homeland of Afghanistan, but, as I asked myself what that meant to me, I noticed there was no single place I could call home. As an Afghan Canadian immigrant who has navigated living in multiple new countries, I understood the definition of home for me had lost its physicality. My conception of the home was no longer a single place, but a feeling since the memories I had of Afghanistan was now blurry and transient. Because of this lack of clarity and fragmentation of memories, I started searching for spaces that reminded me of Afghanistan’s geography. Wandering Amidst the Colors is therefore a record of my search for liminal spaces here in the U.S. that anchor me to my homeland of Afghanistan.
